When “Strong” Stops Working


There was a time when I thought strength meant never breaking.


Keep going. Keep smiling. Keep achieving.


Until one day, I couldn’t.


I remember sitting on the floor of my bedroom, exhausted from trying to hold everything together, my practice, my clinic, my PhD, my family. I had built so much, yet inside I felt like everything was falling apart.


That moment wasn’t the end of my story. It was the beginning.


Because that’s where I discovered something that changed everything - mental fitness.


The Turning Point


Burnout doesn’t discriminate. It doesn’t care about your degrees, your title, or your to-do list.


In optics - as in many professions - burnout often hides behind perfectionism. We care deeply about getting things right, about helping others see clearly, about being reliable.


But when you give everything to everyone else, there’s nothing left for you.


I had to unlearn the idea that success comes from constant motion.


In neuroscience, we know the brain can’t sustain chronic stress without cost. It begins to shift into survival mode, lowering creativity, empathy, and decision-making ability.


That’s when I realised: To truly lead others, I first had to learn how to lead myself.

The F.A.I.L. Model — Turning Setbacks Into Strength


Through my own recovery and research, I developed what I now teach as the F.A.I.L. Model - a framework for building mental fitness that transforms failure into fuel.


F – Focus: Train your mind to notice what’s in your control. Energy flows where attention goes. When you focus on what you can influence, you shift from overwhelm to ownership.

A – Adapt: The most successful leaders aren’t the ones who avoid change — they’re the ones who can bend without breaking. Adaptability is a muscle. Every setback is a chance to strengthen it.

I – Integrate: Bring your values, vision, and wellbeing together. Mental fitness is about integration — not compartmentalising who you are at work, home, and life, but finding alignment across them.

L – Lead: Lead with empathy, not ego. Leadership isn’t about titles or authority — it’s about energy, influence, and impact. When you’re mentally fit, you lead from purpose, not pressure.


This model isn’t theoretical - it’s lived. It’s what helped me move from burnout to breakthrough, from surviving to expanding into new ventures, speaking stages, and mentoring others to do the same.

The Neuroscience of Resilience

Resilience isn’t about being tough. It’s about bounce-back speed.


Every time you face adversity, your brain records it as data. If you process it with curiosity rather than criticism, your neural pathways strengthen - helping you recover faster next time.


This is why mentally fit leaders don’t stay down for long. They’ve trained their brains to extract learning, not self-blame.


In fact, studies in neuroplasticity show that regular reflection, gratitude, and reframing strengthen the prefrontal cortex - the part of the brain responsible for decision-making and emotional regulation.


In simple terms: Every time you choose to grow instead of give up, you’re literally rewiring your brain for success.


Rewriting the Narrative


The story of burnout is not one of failure — it’s one of awakening. Because sometimes it takes falling apart to realise what truly matters.


Today, when I mentor healthcare professionals and optical leaders, I remind them: You don’t need to be perfect to be powerful.


You just need to be mentally fit enough to rise again - faster, wiser, and with purpose.


The most extraordinary leaders aren’t the ones who never fell; they’re the ones who refused to stay down.


Fail Forward, Not Flat


If you’re standing at a crossroads - tired, overwhelmed, doubting your next step — remember this: Failure isn’t the opposite of success. It’s part of it.


Every rejection, every mistake, every setback is feedback.


Your power lies not in avoiding them, but in how you respond.


The only real failure is the one you don’t learn from.
